“Speaker is Not the Voice of Govt!” Opposition Questions Om Birla’s Impartiality in Lok Sabha

A fierce debate erupted in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday as opposition leaders collectively questioned the neutrality of Speaker Om Birla. Members of the INDIA bloc alleged that the Chair has become increasingly partisan, favoring the government while stifling the voice of the opposition. The primary contention was that “the Speaker must function as the custodian of the House’s dignity and neutrality, not as a mouthpiece for the government.”

The opposition highlighted instances where microphones were allegedly cut off during crucial speeches and notices for adjournment motions were repeatedly rejected. In response, the treasury benches defended the Speaker, stating that the opposition’s disruptive behavior often leaves the Chair with no choice but to take firm action. However, the opposition remains firm in its demand for a more balanced approach, asserting that the survival of parliamentary democracy depends on the Speaker’s ability to remain above party politics.
