Sovereignty of the Seas: Indigenous Stealth Frigate ‘INS Taragiri’ Set for Commissioning on April 3

In a major boost to India’s maritime defense capabilities, the Indian Navy is all set to commission its latest indigenous stealth frigate, INS Taragiri (F41), on April 3, 2026. The commissioning ceremony, to be held in Visakhapatnam, will be presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Taragiri is the fourth of seven frigates being built under Project 17A (Nilgiri-class), representing a generational leap in India’s warship design.
Cutting-Edge Stealth and Lethality Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, the 6,670-tonne vessel is a masterclass in stealth technology. Its design features a reduced radar cross-section, allowing it to operate undetected in hostile environments. Taragiri is armed with a formidable weapon suite, including BrahMos supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAM), and indigenous anti-submarine rocket launchers.
With over 75% indigenous content, the frigate showcases the growing prowess of India’s defense industrial base. The inclusion of INS Taragiri into the Eastern Fleet is strategically significant, especially as India seeks to counter the expanding footprint of the PLA Navy in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Capable of multi-role missions—ranging from high-intensity surface combat to maritime surveillance and disaster relief—Taragiri stands as a powerful vanguard of India’s blue-water naval ambitions, ensuring the security of vital sea lines of communication.
