Solar Revolution in Indian Railways! Saving Millions Every Month; Is ‘Net Zero 2030’ Goal Within Reach?

Indian Railways is making giant strides toward a sustainable future by aggressively adopting solar energy. By installing solar panels across more than 2,600 railway stations, workshops, and vacant lands, the national carrier has established a solar power generation capacity of approximately 898 MW. A standout performer in this green initiative is the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), which has reached a total solar capacity of 31.890 MWp as of February 2026.

The current financial year (2025-26) alone saw an addition of 22.734 MWp, signaling an accelerated shift toward renewable energy. Division-wise data reveals that Lumding leads the chart with 13.334 MWp, followed by Rangiya with 8.941 MWp. These solar projects are producing an average of 9.18 lakh units of electricity per month, resulting in a staggering monthly saving of around ₹68.80 lakhs for the railways.

To further bolster this infrastructure, work on an additional 19.14 MWp capacity is underway across Lumding, Rangiya, Katihar, and Alipurduar divisions. According to railway officials, these efforts are pivotal in achieving the “Net Zero Carbon Emission” goal by 2030. By reducing carbon footprints and cutting energy costs, Indian Railways is setting a global benchmark for eco-friendly mass transit systems.
