Ration Alert! 12 Lakh Beneficiaries in West Bengal to Lose Access from April 1st—Is Your Name Included?

A massive wave of uncertainty has hit approximately 1.2 million ration card holders in West Bengal as the state government prepares to suspend their supplies starting April 1st. The Food and Supplies Department has identified these beneficiaries as “inactive” or “ghost” accounts, leading to a major crackdown intended to streamline the Public Distribution System (PDS).
The Reason Behind the Suspension: According to top officials at Khadyasree Bhavan, the primary reason for this suspension is prolonged inactivity. Any consumer who has not lifted their allotted food grains for the last six consecutive months or more has been flagged. The department suspects that many of these cards belong to deceased individuals or are being held by middlemen as part of a larger distribution racket. Furthermore, those who have failed to complete their mandatory e-KYC (biometric verification) and Aadhaar linking are also part of this 12-lakh blacklist.
Impact and Statistics: Internal reports suggest that districts like North and South 24 Parganas, along with Nadia and Murshidabad, have the highest number of such dormant cards. By disabling these accounts, the West Bengal government aims to save nearly ₹300-400 crore in monthly subsidies. This move is part of the “Ration Shuddhikaran” (Purification) drive aimed at ensuring that only genuine beneficiaries receive benefits under the Khadya Sathi scheme.
Steps to Reactivate Your Card: For those whose cards have been wrongly flagged or were inactive due to personal reasons, there is still a window for redemption. Beneficiaries must visit their local Fair Price Shop (FPS) and undergo biometric authentication (Fingerprint or Iris scan). Once the e-KYC is successfully updated, the card will be reactivated within 24 to 48 hours. Alternatively, the Aadhaar-Ration linking can be done through the official WBPDS portal.
The Food Minister has reiterated that “No genuine beneficiary will be deprived of their rights,” but emphasized that transparency is non-negotiable. If you haven’t visited your ration shop lately, make sure to check your card status before the April 1st cutoff to avoid an empty bag at the counter.
