Push for Mitali Express Revival Post-Political Shift in Bangladesh; MP Takes Initiative

Following the recent political transition in Bangladesh, efforts are underway to resume the Mitali Express, which connects New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in India to Dhaka in Bangladesh. Jalpaiguri MP Jayanta Kumar Roy has voiced the need to restart the train service, which was suspended due to the recent political instability in the neighbouring country.

The route, which originally saw trains until 1965, was revived on June 1, 2022, as a symbol of bilateral friendship. However, security concerns during the recent unrest led to its temporary halt. With the situation in Bangladesh stabilizing under the interim government, the MP plans to move the Railway Ministry for a swift and secure resumption of the service. This move is seen as crucial for the tourism sector in North Bengal and for thousands of people travelling across the border for medical and business purposes.
