In a bizarre development from Nadia’s Tehatta, a primary school teacher has been sent to jail for allegedly claiming to restore the eyesight of blind individuals through “miraculous” or “unscientific” means. The arrest has sparked a heated debate between the teacher’s followers and rationalist organizations in West Bengal.

The teacher had reportedly been practicing a clandestine method, claiming he could bring light to those in permanent darkness. When news spread that a local youth had allegedly regained his sight under the teacher’s care, crowds began to swell. However, rationalist groups flagged the activity as a scam, arguing that such claims are medically impossible and exploit vulnerable families. Acting on complaints of fraud and practicing medicine without a license, the police conducted a raid and took the teacher into custody.
