How Amitabh Bachchan Persuaded a Hesitant Govinda for ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’

In 1998, David Dhawan’s ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ stormed the box office, winning hearts with its catchy dialogues, vibrant songs, and the electric chemistry between Govinda and Amitabh Bachchan. Govinda’s stellar performance left audiences in awe, yet few know that the actor initially refused to take on the project. The story of why he hesitated and how Amitabh convinced him reveals a deeply personal chapter in Govinda’s life.

During an episode of ‘The Kapil Sharma Show,’ Govinda, joined by his wife Sunita Ahuja and Shakti Kapoor, opened up about the film. When Kapil asked how he felt so at ease working with a legend like Amitabh, Govinda shared, “When ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ was offered, I was a superstar. But between 1993 and 1994, my family suffered multiple losses. Those tragedies left me shattered, and I had no desire to work. David narrated the story, but I declined, wanting a break. Then, the respected Amitabh Bachchan visited my home and urged me to do the film.”

Govinda continued, “I pleaded, saying my physical and mental state wasn’t right. I also admitted, ‘Sir, you’re extremely punctual, while I’m notorious for being late. The press exploits this, and I don’t want to tarnish your reputation.’ But he insisted, ‘Govinda, I want you to do this film. Ignore those concerns.’ So, I agreed.” Remarkably, Govinda revealed he never read the script or rehearsed scenes. “I’d show up on set, take the script, and perform. I reached at 4 a.m. to ensure Amitabh ji faced no inconvenience,” he added. The film became a massive hit, and Govinda noted, “I’m forever grateful for the love audiences showered on it.” This heartfelt anecdote underscores Amitabh’s mentorship and Govinda’s resilience, making ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ a triumph both on and off the screen.
