Asthma attack: Causes and preventive measures that can save lives

New Delhi: Asthma, a serious respiratory disease, affects 35 million people in India. According to the Global Asthma Report 2022, 46% of the world’s asthma deaths occur in India. An asthma attack occurs when the lumen of the airways narrows, making it difficult to breathe. Dr Devendra Kumar Singh, Sharda Care Healthcity, explains, “Triggers such as allergies, dust, pollen, weather changes or exercise constrict the airways, causing coughing, shortness of breath and chest tightness.”
Using an inhaler immediately during an asthma attack is the most effective measure. The microgram dose of the inhaler reaches the lungs directly, reducing side effects. “Take the inhaler twice, if there is no relief, repeat after 10 minutes. Nebulizer is also helpful,” says Dr Singh. If an inhaler is not available, stay calm, reduce activity and sit with the support of a wall. Syrups containing Deriphylline or Terbutaline may provide temporary relief, but consult a doctor immediately.
Asthma cannot be completely cured, but avoiding triggers and timely use of inhalers can keep it under control. Awareness and prompt action can save many lives.
