UPSC Success Story: Karthik Madhira left the dream of cricket and became IPS, hoisted the flag in the fourth attempt

The journey started with cricket
Karthik Madhira was born and brought up in Hyderabad. He was inclined towards cricket since childhood. He showed his talent at the Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 levels. Seeing his bowling and batting on the field, people started considering him a future star. But life had something else in store for him. An injury and some personal reasons took him away from cricket. Karthik said, “Cricket was my first love, but circumstances forced me to choose another path.” From Engineering to UPSC After leaving cricket, Karthik focused on studies. He obtained an engineering degree in Computer Science from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU). After this, he also worked in a private company for 6 months. But soon he felt that his real purpose was something else. Karthik said, “I felt that by joining the civil services, I could do something big for the society.” From here his UPSC preparation started, which was not easy. Did not give up, won in the fourth attempt The path to UPSC is never easy, and this challenge was no less for Karthik too. He faced failure in the first three attempts. But every time he stood up with stronger determination. In 2019, his hard work paid off in his fourth attempt. Karthik secured 103rd rank in UPSC in All India. He got 817 marks in the written exam and 179 marks in the interview, i.e. a total of 996 marks. This success gave him a chance to become an IPS in Maharashtra cadre. His coach Ramesh Sharma says, “Karthik’s dedication was worth seeing. He used to turn even defeat into a lesson.”
Passion for cricket still alive
Even after becoming an IPS, Karthik’s relationship with cricket did not break. While performing his duties as ASP in Lonavala, he gets on the field whenever he gets a chance. A colleague said, “When Karthik sahab plays cricket, his energy is worth seeing.” This passion is a symbol of balance in his life. He says, “Cricket taught me discipline and patience, which helps me in my work today.”
