Nor’wester Fury! IMD Issues Hailstorm and 60 kmph Wind Warning Across West Bengal

The month of Chaitra is ending on a turbulent note for West Bengal as the Alipore Meteorological Department sounds a high alert for severe thunderstorms and hailstorms across the state today. Following Friday night’s intense squall, atmospheric instability remains high due to a cyclonic circulation over the region. Experts predict that wind speeds could reach up to 60 kmph, mimicking the intensity of a classic “Kalbaisakhi.”
South Bengal Situation: Kolkata and its neighboring districts, including Howrah, Hooghly, and North & South 24 Parganas, are expected to witness moderate rainfall accompanied by frequent lightning. A specific warning for hailstorms has been issued for Birbhum and Murshidabad. While the temperature in the city has plummeted by nearly 5 degrees providing relief from the scorching sun, the risk of lightning strikes and structural damage remains a major concern for the administration.
North Bengal Under Orange Alert: The situation is even more critical in the northern part of the state. An ‘Orange Alert’ is in place for Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Alipurduar, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated. The persistence of these conditions until Tuesday could trigger localized flooding and minor landslides in hilly terrains. Residents are advised to avoid staying under trees or electric poles during the storm as the frequency of lightning is expected to be exceptionally high this weekend.
