Murshidabad University Renamed After Raja Krishnath! Historic Victory After 8-Year Struggle

In a landmark decision that honors the heritage of Murshidabad, the State Government has officially proposed to rename Murshidabad University as the ‘Murshidabad Maharaja Krishnath University, Baharampur.’ An amendment bill was introduced in the Legislative Assembly session, marking the culmination of a fierce eight-year-long struggle by former students and residents.
The institution, which began its journey in 1853 as Krishnath College through the generous contributions of Raja Krishnath and Rani Swarnamoyee of the Cossimbazar Royal Family, was upgraded to a university in 2018. However, the exclusion of Raja Krishnath’s name from the university’s title sparked widespread outrage. Protesters argued that removing the founder’s name was an insult to the district’s rich educational history.
For nearly a decade, alumni and local intellectuals led a relentless movement to reinstate the legendary king’s name. Acknowledging this public sentiment, the state government, with the consent of CM Mamata Banerjee, finally moved the amendment bill. As the news spread, jubilant crowds gathered in Baharampur to celebrate what they called a “Victory of Emotion and Heritage.”
Historians and senior citizens have welcomed the move, stating that this decision ensures the legacy of Raja Krishnath remains immortal in the annals of education. The administrative process to finalize the name change is expected to be completed swiftly, marking a new chapter for Murshidabad’s premier educational institution.
