Massive Voter List Cleanup! 40 Lakh Names Adjudicated, 18 Lakh Names Deleted Ahead of 2026 Polls!

In a major push to ensure “error-free” elections in 2026, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has completed the adjudication of nearly 40 lakh disputed names in the West Bengal electoral rolls. According to recent reports, out of these 40 lakh cases, the names of approximately 18 lakh individuals have been permanently deleted. This massive deletion has sparked a heated debate between political heavyweights in the state.

Why the Deletions? The ECI stated that the deletions were based on the ASDD (Absent, Shifted, Dead, Duplicate) criteria. Most of the 18 lakh names belonged to deceased voters or those who had permanently migrated to other states. The objective is to eliminate “ghost voters” and prevent any possibility of proxy voting in the high-stakes Assembly elections.

The Road Ahead: While 18 lakh names have been removed, many voters are still waiting for a final decision on their status. For those who believe their names were wrongfully excluded, the Commission has set up 19 tribunals led by former judges where appeals can be filed.
