Mass Deletion from Voter Lists! TMC Moves Calcutta HC to Ease Re-inclusion Process

With the high-stakes Assembly Elections approaching, the alleged mass deletion of names from supplementary voter lists has triggered a fresh political standoff in West Bengal. In a bid to assist affected citizens, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has moved the Calcutta High Court, submitting a detailed letter to the Chief Justice with several proposals to simplify the appeal process.
The TMC’s primary demand is the introduction of an ‘offline’ application system for the newly formed tribunals. The party argues that a purely online system is difficult for rural citizens who are not tech-savvy. Furthermore, the letter suggests that instead of limiting hearings to district and sub-divisional headquarters, the government should allow applications and hearings at every Block Development Office (BDO). This would make the process accessible to marginalized and remote populations. Additional demands include providing clear options for uploading documents online, allowing both physical and virtual hearings, and publishing appeal results on a daily basis. Given the proximity of the elections, the ruling party has urged the judiciary to expedite the entire legal process to ensure every eligible citizen can exercise their right to vote.
