Major Arms Smuggling Racket Busted in Kolkata Ahead of Polls; Bihar Man Arrested

In a massive breakthrough ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly Elections, the Detective Department of Kolkata Police foiled a major arms smuggling attempt in the heart of the city. On Monday afternoon, the Anti-Rowdy Squad (ARS) conducted a sting operation at Rasbehari Connector under Kasba Police Station, leading to the arrest of a 38-year-old smuggler from Bihar.

Acting on a tip-off that high-grade firearms were being smuggled from Bihar and Jharkhand, undercover detectives intercepted a suspicious auto-rickshaw heading towards EM Bypass around 1:00 PM. Upon searching the bag of the suspect, Mohammad Ishtiaq, officials discovered a sophisticated 7MM pistol, three single-shot pistols, two six-chamber revolvers, and 11 rounds of live cartridges.

Joint CP (Crime) Rupesh Kumar stated that an intensive investigation is underway to identify the intended recipients of these weapons and to uncover further links to this cross-border smuggling ring. With security concerns mounting before the high-voltage elections, this successful seizure is being hailed as a major victory for the city’s law enforcement agencies.
