LPG Booking Scam: Cyber Criminals Using ‘Gas Crisis’ To Loot Common Man

Cyber fraudsters are constantly evolving their tactics to target unsuspecting citizens, and their latest bait is the common man’s basic necessity—Cooking Gas (LPG). Amidst rumors of supply shortages or KYC updates, scammers are sending phishing messages designed to panic users and lure them into a financial trap. If you receive a text claiming your gas connection will be disconnected due to a shortage or lack of documentation, stop before you click.

The modus operandi of this scam involves sending a malicious link via SMS or WhatsApp. The message often warns that the user’s gas booking has been suspended and provides a link to “rectify” the issue. Once the victim clicks the link, they are redirected to a fake website or prompted to download a remote access app. This allows hackers to monitor the victim’s phone, intercept OTPs, and steal banking credentials. Within minutes, the entire balance of the linked bank account is siphoned off.

Cybersecurity experts and oil marketing companies have clarified that they never ask for sensitive banking information or direct payments through unsolicited links. Customers are advised to use only official apps like ‘Indane’, ‘HP Pay’, or ‘BharatGas’ for bookings and payments. If you encounter such a fraudulent message, report it immediately to the national cybercrime helpline. Remember, staying informed and cautious is your first line of defense against these digital predators. Don’t let fear drive you to a financial disaster.
