Loan Rules Changing from April 1st: CIBIL Score to Update Every 7 Days, Zero Charges on Early Loan Repayment!

In a landmark move to enhance transparency and consumer protection in the banking sector, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced a series of reforms effective from April 1, 2026. These changes are set to provide significant relief to millions of borrowers across the country, making personal finance management much swifter and more cost-effective.

Weekly CIBIL Score Updates: Starting April 1, borrowers will no longer have to wait for a full month to see changes in their credit profile. Currently, CIBIL scores are updated once a month, but the new mandate requires updates every seven days. Data will be refreshed on the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th of every month. This rapid tracking will benefit those looking to improve their scores quickly for new loan applications. However, defaults will also be recorded just as fast.

Zero Foreclosure Charges: The most significant relief comes for individuals wishing to settle their debts early. According to the new guidelines, no pre-payment or foreclosure charges will be levied on floating-rate home, car, personal, or education loans. Previously, banks often penalized customers for paying off their loans ahead of schedule using their savings.

Other Key Reforms:

  • Multiple Nominees: Customers can now add up to four nominees to their bank accounts and lockers, ensuring smoother legal transitions.
  • Gold Loan Extension: For the jewelry business, the repayment period for gold loans has been extended from 180 days to 270 days, improving cash flow for small businesses.
