‘Letter First, Motion Later’— Abhishek Banerjee Clarifies Stance on Speaker Controversy!

The political atmosphere in the Parliament has reached a boiling point as the Congress party decided to move a No-Confidence Motion against Speaker Om Birla, accusing him of bias toward the ruling party. While major INDIA bloc allies like the Samajwadi Party and DMK have backed Rahul Gandhi’s move, the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) absence from the proposal has raised several eyebrows.
Addressing the speculation, TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee provided a clear justification for the party’s stance. He stated that while the TMC has no fundamental objection to the motion, they preferred a more phased approach. “We wanted to send a formal letter to the Speaker first, outlining our grievances. We believed it was fair to give him a few days to see if he initiates any corrective measures based on that letter,” Banerjee explained.
The TMC leadership believes in following parliamentary decorum by offering an opportunity for reform before taking the ultimate step of a No-Confidence Motion. Abhishek added, “We wanted to observe his response to our concerns. If no action were taken, we would have certainly proceeded with further steps.”
While the Congress, SP, and DMK are pushing for immediate action citing the suppression of opposition voices, TMC’s ‘wait and watch’ strategy suggests a tactical difference within the alliance. This move has sparked debates about the coordination within the INDIA bloc, though Abhishek’s clarification aims to dispel rumors of a major rift. The political circle is now watching closely to see if TMC eventually joins the motion or sticks to its independent strategy.
