Ghana satisfies India’s hunger for gold, why is this visit of PM Modi important?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to the West African country Ghana from July 2, which is the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in three decades. During this visit, PM Modi will meet the President of Ghana, address the Parliament and interact with the people of the Indian community. Ghana is an important trading partner for India, especially in terms of gold imports. India buys more than 70 percent of its total imports of gold from Ghana, making this visit a major role in India’s Africa strategy.
This visit is taking place at a time when Ghana is grappling with illegal gold mining, and for India this visit is an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations. There is a bilateral trade of $ 3 billion between the two countries. India has also given grants and concessional loans of more than $ 450 million to Ghana. This visit is expected to increase partnerships in agriculture, vaccine development, defense cooperation, critical minerals and digital sector, taking India-Ghana relations to a new phase.
