Electricity bill of 62 thousand taka! Elderly woman in Burdwan is shocked, case in High Court

Gita Adak, a resident of Shanti Para in Baranilpur, Burdwan city, is shocked after receiving a three-month electricity bill of 62,291 taka. This elderly woman, who lives in an asbestos house with her husband, son, daughter-in-law and one-and-a-half-year-old grandson, has raised questions about how such a huge bill can be received.
She also alleged that the electricity department has issued a notice to disconnect the electricity connection if half the money is not paid by June 2.
Questions about the reason for the sky-high bill:
Gita Adak alleged that she did not use so many units of electricity. She thinks it is impossible to receive such a bill living in an asbestos-made rice house. She has approached the Calcutta High Court, wondering how she will live with her one-and-a-half-year-old grandson in the heat if the electricity connection is disconnected.
Geeta Devi said that she has paid the bills sent by the electricity department within the specified time. She even deposited the money as per the bill last January. Then she raised the question of where did this new arrears come from.
On May 13, 2025, the electricity department sent a bill of Rs 62,291 in the name of Geeta Adak for 6456 units for three months. According to this bill, Rs 21,173 has to be paid by May 16, Rs 21,171 by June 16 and Rs 21,171 by July 15.
Explanation of the electricity department:
On this matter, Gautam Dutta, the East Burdwan Regional Manager of the electricity department, said that Geeta Adak’s electricity bill was sent as per the rules. He claimed that the bill was higher due to “meter accumulation”. Gautam Dutta further said that a year ago, where Geeta Adak used to receive an average bill of more than 1100-1150 units in three quarters, it came down to between 200-210 units in the last three quarters. Then the electricity department staff went to the ground and checked the meter and found that accumulation units were accumulated in the meter. That is, there were some errors in billing earlier due to which the actual units used were not billed, and now those outstanding units have been billed together.
However, Geeta Adak is reluctant to accept this explanation. Her question is, when the electricity department sent the bill on time and she paid it, how did the units accumulate in the meter? This incident has created a sensation in Burdwan city.
