Uttar Pradesh Emerges as India’s EV Powerhouse, Surpassing Major States in Electric Vehicle Adoption!

Recent data reveals that Uttar Pradesh has set a new benchmark in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, with over 4.14 lakh EVs, significantly outperforming states like Delhi (1.83 lakh) and Maharashtra (1.79 lakh). This remarkable surge comes amidst growing global concerns over environment and climate change, where EVs are emerging as a vital sustainable solution. Uttar Pradesh’s achievement is not just a testament to environmental consciousness but also a direct result of the proactive policies implemented by the state government. The Yogi government’s new Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Transport Policy, introduced in 2022, has been instrumental in rapidly boosting EV acceptance and establishing a robust charging infrastructure network. The policy aims to transform the state into a global hub for EV and battery manufacturing, attracting investments worth ₹30,000 crore and generating 10 lakh jobs.

The widespread popularity of e-rickshaws (three-wheelers) in Uttar Pradesh’s tourist cities like Ayodhya, Kashi, Mathura, Prayagraj, along with Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, and Lucknow, accounts for a staggering 85% of total EV sales. These vehicles have proven immensely useful for both passenger and goods transportation, especially in urban areas. Furthermore, Uttar Pradesh has been a major beneficiary of the Indian government’s FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India) One and Two schemes, further bolstering e-transport. The government has taken significant steps to develop charging infrastructure, recently deciding to build over 300 new charging stations across 16 urban bodies, with the highest number planned for Ayodhya, where tourist footfall is steadily increasing. While India currently has 33,000 EV chargers, with 35% being fast chargers, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has emphasized the need for more fast-charging stations and improvements to existing ones, as experts project 10.2 crore EVs in India by 2030.
