HUGE! App Cab Drivers Unleash Fury Over New Fines – Your Rides Could Be Affected!

App-based cab drivers in Kolkata are gearing up for a massive protest against a contentious new traffic regulation that mandates paying fines through the app to renew essential vehicle documents like permits, Certificate of Fitness (CF), or insurance. This unprecedented move, which effectively blocks drivers from accessing crucial services if their fines are unpaid via the app, has ignited widespread anger among the app cab community. The Calcutta Ola Uber App Cab Operators and Drivers Union has declared a significant demonstration, scheduled for Thursday, May 29th, where they will gather at Shramik Bhawan at 11 AM before marching towards the Transport Department. This protest highlights the drivers’ growing frustration with what they perceive as an oppressive new system, arguing that it removes the previous relief offered through Lok Adalats, where they could settle fines with certain concessions.
The Union alleges that the new rule, which links the renewal of permits, CF, insurance, and pollution certificates directly to app-based fine payments, is an “atrocity” that must be halted immediately. They are also demanding more frequent camps to help drivers convert their private number plates to commercial ones, especially for those burdened by loans. Additionally, a crucial demand is the annual announcement of fare revisions, which they argue is essential for their livelihood amidst rising operational costs. Sohagi Khan, Assistant Secretary of the Ola Uber App Cab Operators and Drivers Union, confirmed the five-point charter of demands for the May 29th protest. He detailed the rally’s route, starting from Shramik Bhawan, proceeding through Moulali and Creek Row to the Transport Department, with the possibility of a vehicle procession. Commuters are anticipating potential traffic disruptions due to the protest, underscoring the widespread impact of this growing dispute between app cab drivers and the new government regulations.
