India’s Undersea Game Changer? Navy Set to Unleash 12 ‘Mine Destroyers’ Worth ₹44,000 Crore!

India’s naval might is on the cusp of a significant upgrade with the imminent acquisition of 12 state-of-the-art Mine Counter Measure Vessels (MCMVs). These indigenously built ‘mine destroyers,’ estimated at a colossal ₹44,000 crore, are poised to revolutionize the Indian Navy’s ability to detect and neutralize underwater threats. The Defense Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, is expected to give its nod to this ambitious project soon. This move is crucial as the Indian Navy currently lacks active mine countermeasures, making its ports, coastlines, and vital sea lanes vulnerable to hidden underwater explosives. The advanced MCMVs, though smaller than traditional warships, will play a decisive role in wartime, equipped with cutting-edge sonar, robotic tools, and non-magnetic materials to avoid triggering enemy mines.

The urgency of this project is underscored by the escalating naval presence of China and Pakistan in the region. Both nations are rapidly expanding their maritime capabilities, posing a continuous strategic challenge to India’s security. With no active mine-sweepers since older ones were decommissioned years ago, these new MCMVs are not just a strategic asset but a critical necessity for India’s maritime defense. While the project, initially conceived in 2005, faced setbacks and cancellation in 2017-18 due to technical and cost disputes, its revival signifies India’s commitment to bolstering its self-reliance in defense. Although the first delivery is anticipated to take 7-8 years, this investment marks a decisive step towards securing India’s strategic autonomy and preparing for future challenges at sea. The recent ‘Operation Sindoor’ in the Arabian Sea, showcasing India’s formidable naval strength, further emphasizes the nation’s readiness to counter any maritime threats. With 60 warships currently under construction and approval for 31 more, these “small but mighty” MCMVs will enable India to thwart any underwater maneuver by adversaries, making the DAC’s impending approval eagerly awaited.
