This renewed increase has sparked concerns and led to questions about the possibility of another strict lockdown. As new sub-variants of the Omicron strain, JN.1 and LF.7, have emerged in India, expert opinion suggests they are not highly virulent, and there is no need for panic. Most current cases exhibit mild symptoms, indicating a lower severity of the infection. However, the escalating number of cases has certainly heightened the government’s vigilance, prompting a close watch on the evolving situation.

A full lockdown is typically considered a last resort for any government, implemented only when the infection spirals out of control and the mortality rate becomes unmanageably high. Before such a drastic measure, various precautions and restrictions are usually imposed, including mandatory mask-wearing, restrictions on public gatherings, or temporary market closures. While the government is not currently planning a lockdown, it is continuously monitoring the situation. Compared to the first and second waves, widespread vaccination and booster doses have significantly enhanced public immunity, making the current variants less dangerous.
