The Hindu population in Bangladesh is steadily decreasing, raising serious concerns about the future of the country’s secular and pluralistic society. Currently, out of a total population of approximately 170 million, Hindus number around 13.5 million, accounting for about 7.97% of the total population. Although Hindus still constitute over 20% of the population in four districts, the overall picture is alarming.

Reasons for the Decline in Hindu Population:

In recent decades, incidents of attacks and persecution against the Hindu community in Bangladesh have significantly increased. Analysts have identified several reasons behind this decline:

Attacks and Harassment: Hindus have been subjected to economic and religious harassment by extremist organizations like Jamaat-e-Islami and other radical groups. Their places of worship, homes, and businesses are regularly attacked.

Vested Property Act: This law has been a long-standing source of crisis for the Hindu community. Misuse of this act has caused many Hindus to lose their ancestral property and flee the country. Although some amendments have been made to the law, its implementation is still not sufficiently supportive of Hindus.

Erosion of Secularism: Despite Bangladesh’s constitution being secular, the country shows a growing tendency towards becoming an Islamic state, which has increased religious animosity towards Hindus.

Economic and Social Discrimination: Economic backwardness, lack of education, and prevailing social discrimination are also considered major reasons for Hindus leaving the country. Many Hindus feel they do not receive equal opportunities in society.

According to several reports, if the current trend continues, the existence of Hindus in Bangladesh could be eradicated within the next few decades. This situation has become a matter of deep concern for Bangladeshi civil society, human rights organizations, and the international community. It signifies not just the disappearance of a religious group but also the deterioration of a nation’s cultural and social pluralism.

Solutions and the Need for International Action:

To address this alarming situation, the following steps are considered crucial:

Equal Application of Law: Ensuring the equal application of law for all citizens and strictly suppressing any form of persecution against religious minorities.

Increasing Religious Tolerance: Creating widespread awareness to foster religious tolerance and build a pluralistic society. Spreading messages of harmony instead of division through education and mass media.

Amending Property Protection Laws: Making appropriate amendments to the Vested Property Act to protect Hindu property and ensuring its proper implementation.

Pressure from the International Community: The international community, especially neighboring countries like India, must exert pressure on the Bangladesh government to protect Hindu rights. Human rights organizations need to play a more active role in this regard.

The existence of the Hindu community in Bangladesh is now facing a severe crisis. A coordinated and joint effort at all levels is needed to change this situation, ensuring that the country’s secular character is preserved and all citizens can live with equal rights and dignity.
