New UPI Rule Incoming! Here’s How Customers Will Benefit

For those who conduct online transactions using UPI platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and BHIM, there’s crucial news. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced that a new rule for UPI transactions will come into effect from June 30, 2025.
This new regulation aims to further enhance transparency and security in online payments.
Under the new rule, when making a payment via UPI, users will only see the recipient’s real name as registered with their bank. No nicknames or aliases will be displayed on the screen. This means if you scan a QR code to pay or send money to a phone number, your phone will show the recipient’s actual name after scanning, preventing any confusion from misleading nicknames.
The NPCI stated that the primary objective of this change is to prevent fraud and increase transparency in digital payments. Currently, many UPI users employ nicknames or names that fraudsters can use to conceal their true identities. Making the real name visible will boost users’ confidence in UPI transactions and significantly reduce the risk of sending money to the wrong person.
From June 30, 2025, this rule will apply to both person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions. All major UPI apps, including PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, and BHIM, will be required to comply with this regulation.
The NPCI has taken this precautionary measure to ensure fast and secure online payments. Being aware of this new rule beforehand will make your online transactions even more secure and seamless.
