Pakistan’s Cyber Assault on Nuclear Plants: First Phelgam, Now Power Grid

Pakistan’s provocations show no signs of abating after the Phelgam attack. For nine consecutive days, its forces have violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control with relentless firing. On Saturday, Pakistan tested the 450-km-range Abdali ballistic missile. Now, a sinister new front has emerged in this proxy war: cyberattacks targeting India’s power infrastructure, with nuclear power plants in the crosshairs. Intelligence sources point to China’s covert support behind Pakistan’s schemes, prompting a nationwide high alert.

India’s 25 nuclear power facilities, including those in Kalpakkam, Kudankulam, Tarapur, and Narora, face this looming threat. Intelligence reports indicate Pakistan’s cyber units are primarily targeting the Northern Grid to cripple the power supply. “Such an attack could paralyze the system,” warns cybersecurity expert Rahul Singh. In 2019, a failed cyber assault targeted Kudankulam, India’s largest nuclear plant. Recently, Pakistani hacker groups HOAX1337 and National Cyber Crew attempted breaches on Indian military and security websites. The Power Ministry has issued a high alert, with the National Load Despatch Centre notifying regional grids.

The nation’s five regional power grids, overseeing 33 state load despatch centres, are under tight surveillance. The Computer Security Incident Response Team is scrutinizing grid defenses, with special alerts issued for the Tehri Dam and Kumbakonam plant. “China’s technological backing in Pakistan’s plot is evident,” says intelligence officer Ajay Das. Post-Pulwama and Balakot, nuclear plants faced similar cyber threats. The Phelgam attack, targeting tourists, aligns with Pakistan’s broader plan to destabilize Kashmir and India, with China pulling strings behind the scenes.

India is gearing up for a robust response. While intelligence and cyber teams have thwarted attacks, the Pak-China nexus fuels concerns. Authorities urge heightened security measures to safeguard critical infrastructure.
