Sovereignty Is Not for Sale: Mexico Rejects Trump’s Proposal to Deploy U.S. Troops

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum declared on Saturday that U.S. President Donald Trump proposed sending American troops to Mexico to combat drug trafficking, an offer she firmly rejected. Speaking to supporters in eastern Mexico, she stated, “Sovereignty is not for sale. Sovereignty is cherished and protected.” Her remarks responded to a Wall Street Journal report detailing a tense phone call last month, during which Trump allegedly pressured her to accept a larger role for the U.S. military in fighting Mexico’s drug cartels. The White House has not yet commented on her statements.

Sheinbaum recounted Trump’s offer: “How can we help you fight drug trafficking? My proposal is that the U.S. military come and assist you.” Her response was unequivocal: “No, President Trump.” Amid resounding applause, she emphasized, “We can work together, but you in your territory and we in ours. We will never accept U.S. military presence on Mexican soil.” Her stance underscores Mexico’s commitment to its autonomy, even as the U.S. escalates its anti-drug efforts along their shared border.

Since January, Trump has intensified U.S. military presence at the southern border, following orders to bolster the military’s role in curbing immigration. The U.S. Northern Command has increased troop numbers and surveillance to intercept fentanyl smuggling. On February 19, Trump designated several drug-trafficking gangs and cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, restricting their activities and equipping law enforcement with more resources. The U.S. has also sought expanded authority for its special forces to collaborate with Mexican units combating cartels.

Sheinbaum’s resolute rejection signals potential friction ahead, despite months of cooperation on immigration and trade. Analysts warn that U.S. pressure for unilateral military intervention could push her and Trump toward confrontation, straining bilateral ties. Her insistence on mutual respect for territorial boundaries highlights the delicate balance in addressing shared challenges like drug trafficking, with implications for future collaboration between the two nations.
