India Shuts Down Pakistan Trade, Bans Direct and Indirect Imports

Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Indian government has delivered a decisive blow by imposing an immediate ban on all direct and indirect imports from Pakistan. This move effectively shuts down all trade between the two nations. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Commerce on May 2, the decision amends the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023. “This step prioritizes national security and public interest,” a senior official stated, underscoring the strategic intent behind the action.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) clarified that a new clause, “Prohibition on Imports from Pakistan,” has been added to the FTP. It states, “All goods originating in or exported from Pakistan, whether freely importable or permitted under any other rule, are prohibited from direct or indirect import or transit with immediate effect until further orders.” Exemptions will only be granted with explicit government approval. The decision follows the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists, intensifying India’s resolve against cross-border terrorism.

Since the 2019 Pulwama attack, direct trade between the two countries had nearly ceased, though indirect trade via third countries like Dubai and Singapore persisted. This new ban closes that loophole, targeting Pakistan’s exports, particularly cement, textiles, and agricultural products. Analysts predict significant strain on Pakistan’s already fragile economy. The move comes alongside other measures, including the closure of the Attari-Wagah border and reduced diplomatic ties, reflecting India’s broader strategy to isolate Pakistan economically and diplomatically.

“This is not just an economic decision but a matter of national security,” a government source emphasized. While the ban may heighten bilateral tensions, it signals India’s unwavering stance against terrorism. The Pahalgam attack has galvanized public and political calls for stringent action, and this trade embargo reinforces India’s zero-tolerance policy. As the region braces for potential fallout, India’s firm position underscores its commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and security.
