Railways on high alert after Pahalgam attack, strict instructions to GRPF

Indian Railways has been put on high alert in view of possible threats following the horrific terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22. Intelligence inputs indicate that Pakistan’s spy agency ISI is planning targeted attacks on Kashmiri Pandits, intelligence police and non-locals in Srinagar and Ganderbal. Railway infrastructure, especially due to the large presence of non-local workers, has become a potential target for terrorists. Railways has directed GRPF, RPF, RPSF and personnel to be on high alert. “Coordination with local police and intelligence agencies is essential to ensure security,” an official said.

Intelligence reports said that on the evening of April 21, Bandipora terrorist Hashar Pare Hamza and an over ground worker were seen moving towards Patton railway track from Kreri village in Baramulla with weapons. Besides, terrorist outfits are planning attacks on security forces and non-locals in north, central and south Kashmir. The habit of railway workers frequently leaving their barracks to go to local markets is putting them at risk. The railways has ordered an immediate end to this practice. “This step by the railways is timely to avert potential dangers,” said security expert Amit Sharma.

Security has been beefed up across the country after the death of 26 people in Pahalgam. Searches have been stepped up at railway stations, tunnels and bridges. Passengers are being checked with metal detectors in Agra Cantt. In the MoU, the GRPF and RPF are jointly conducting searches at stations and trains. These steps reflect the government’s strong commitment to national security, but there is also growing concern among the general public. The authorities said that everyone’s cooperation is essential to protect the railway infrastructure.
