Important meeting of JPC on ‘One Nation, One Election’: Countrywide tour, committee will take opinion from every section

New Delhi: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on ‘One Nation, One Election’ (ONOE) is holding an important meeting in Delhi today. JPC Chairman PP Choudhary said that the committee will start a countrywide tour from next month, starting with Maharashtra. This step has been taken to know the opinion of all stakeholders and to test the feasibility of this proposal. Choudhary said, “We will take the opinion of every section—be it politicians, sportspersons or common citizens—so that it is clear whether this policy is beneficial for the country or not.” The committee has launched the ONOE website for transparency, which will collect suggestions in all languages. Choudhary stressed, “Transparency is our goal. The website will be effective in gathering the views of stakeholders.” The tour will start in Maharashtra from May 17, followed by areas like Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh. Former Supreme Court judges Justice Hemant Gupta, SN Jha, BS Chauhan and Abhishek Manu Singhvi will also attend the meeting.
“Differences of opinion are natural in a democracy, but all parties will agree in the interest of the country,” Chowdhary expressed confidence. This initiative is being considered an important step not only towards streamlining the electoral process, but also towards saving resources and increasing administrative efficiency.
