Truth of ‘Smiling Moon’: What will be seen in the sky on April 25?

A viral image on social media has claimed that a ‘smiling moon’ will be seen in the sky on April 25, 2025, where the Moon and two planets will come together to form a smile-like view. However, astronomers have rejected this claim. NASA astronomer Dr Ravi Sharma said, “This image is misleading. On April 25, the Moon, Venus and Saturn will form a beautiful triangle, but there will be no ‘smiley face’ view.” The rumour possibly started with a fake April Fools’ Day post, which also misled several news organisations.

On April 25, before sunrise, a 12% illuminated Moon will be seen on the eastern horizon, with bright Venus and faint Saturn nearby. The dark side of the Moon may look lighter due to ‘Earthshine’, but the planets will be on the illuminated side of the Moon, not on the dark side like ‘eyes’. The claim of a ‘smiling moon’ on May 16 is also false, as Jupiter and Venus will not be near the moon on that day.
Analysts say that such rumours generate enthusiasm for astronomy but spread misinformation. Astronomy lovers are advised to enjoy the real triangular view on the morning of April 25 and avoid misleading pictures. This phenomenon reflects the simplicity and beauty of nature, which will be captivating even without exaggeration.
