India is facing the threat of a devastating earthquake, scientists warn

India is heading towards a major geological crisis. Scientists have warned that the abnormal movement in the Indian tectonic plate could lead to devastating earthquakes in the future. According to research published recently in the ‘American Geophysical Union’, the Indian plate is on the verge of splitting into two parts. In this process, called delamination, a large part of the plate is sinking into the Earth’s mantle, increasing tension and cracks on the surface. Stanford University geologist Simon Klemperer says, “This tension can lead to a major earthquake at any time.”
The Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau may be most affected by this movement, where seismic activities are already active. According to Utrecht University geologist Douwe Hinsbergen, “This process is so complex that it is still challenging to understand its full impact, but the danger is clear.” Research suggests that the disintegration of the Indian plate can not only increase the intensity of earthquakes, but can also change the geography of North India. Scientists have suggested that there is an urgent need to adopt earthquake-resistant construction techniques and promote public awareness campaigns. Experts warn that if this process accelerates, India could face unprecedented seismic challenges.
