The engineers of the X-Robots company located in the city of Dalian in northeastern China are making such humanoid robots that can show emotions and expressions on the face. As soon as you step into the X-Robots factory, a different view is seen. Face masks, hands and feet made of silicone are scattered on the tables. This scene looks no less than a science-fiction film, but this is reality.
The company’s CEO Li Boyang said, “We have our own software, as well as many teams based on algorithms, which make this project special.” According to him, making a humanoid robot is the most complex task in robotics. He said, “Many basic models and algorithms are open source, which everyone uses. But our focus is on making robots recognize humans and express their emotions with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI).”
Robot imitating emotions
One example is enough to understand the specialty of this technology. When an X-Robots employee shakes his head, smiles or sticks out his tongue, the humanoid robot standing in front tries to copy that movement. For this, the robot uses small motors installed in its face. Seeing this is nothing less than magic.
Li Boyang further said, “We are making a basic model which is ‘multi-model’. This robot will be able to show many emotions and will also be able to give correct responses through its mouth based on the environment around it.” That is, this robot will not only see and understand, but will also respond – that too like humans.
Game of cost and time
According to X-Robots, it takes two weeks to one month to make a humanoid robot. Its cost ranges between 1.5 million yuan (about 20.7 million taka) to 2 million yuan (about 35 million taka). Despite such a cost, the company believes that this technology will bring revolution in many fields in the future.
At present, the main purpose of these robots is to prepare them for display in museums. There is one such robot in the main building of the company itself, which is the center of attraction for the visitors. But Li Boyang’s eyes are much further than this.
Future of robots in health and education

Lee believes that humanoid robots will play an important role in future areas such as healthcare and education. “Mental health counselling and care are definitely among its future uses. We are doing research in this direction—for example, supportive treatment and early detection of mental disorders,” he said.

He further added, “Emotional communication systems are very important in those business areas which are related to children. In education too, this technology can create a better rapport with children.” Lee’s thinking shows that robots will not remain just machines—they will come closer to humans.
