Odisha Hosts 18th National Chess Championship for Visually Challenged, Champions Eye Global Stage

Bhubaneswar, April 4, 2025 – The 18th National Chess Championship for the Visually Challenged kicked off with a powerful display of skill and determination at SAI International Residential School (SIRS) in Bhubaneswar. Hosted by SAI International Education Group in partnership with the All-India Chess Federation for the Blind (AICFB) and the Odisha Chess Association for Visually Challenged (OCAVC), the event runs from April 2 to 6, 2025. Supported by the Department of Sports and Youth Services, Government of Odisha, and ProChESTA, this championship underscores a bold commitment to inclusivity in sports.
A Gathering of Talent and Tenacity
The tournament has drawn 54 players—52 men and two women—from 15 states and union territories across India. Maharashtra boasts the largest contingent with 11 participants, while Odisha fields four strong contenders: Soundarya Kumar Pradhan, Subhendu Kumar Patra, Prachurya Kumar Pradhan, and Deepak Kumar Bhoi. Competing in a rigorous nine-round individual format, these athletes are vying not just for national glory but for a chance to represent India at international events in Serbia and Poland later this year.
Celebrating Chess Titans
Among the celebrated players was Odisha’s own Soundarya Kumar Pradhan, a gold medalist at the 2022 World Team Chess Championship for the Blind in Macedonia and a standout performer at the 2023 Asian Para Games in China. Joining him in the spotlight were luminaries like Kishan Gangolli from Karnataka, a silver medalist at the 2022 IBCA World Team Championship, and Darpan Inani from Gujarat, who clinched individual gold at the 2023 Asian Para Games. Maharashtra’s Aryan B Joshi, a silver medalist at the 2022 IBCA World Junior Chess Championship in France, also earned accolades, alongside other decorated players like Prachurya Kumar Pradhan and Swapanil S.
Dr. Satpathy, addressing the gathering, praised the players’ resilience. “Chess is more than a game—it’s a testament to strategy, patience, and an unyielding spirit,” he said. “These champions remind us that true strength lies within. A Vision of Empowerment
Dr. Silpi Sahoo, Chairperson of SAI International Education Group, echoed this sentiment. “Hosting this championship is a privilege and a responsibility,” she noted. “It’s about breaking barriers and honoring the human spirit. Our founder, Late Dr. Bijaya Kumar Sahoo, believed in the transformative power of education and sports. This event embodies his legacy of equal opportunity.”
A Broader Impact
The event’s significance extends beyond the board. Swayangsu Satyapragyan, an International Master and Administrator of ProChESTA, highlighted its broader message. “This championship showcases determination and intellect,” he said. “It’s a privilege to witness SAI International amplify these voices.”
As the tournament progresses, all eyes are on the players’ next moves—both on the chessboard and in their inspiring journeys. With the National Anthem ringing out at the close of the felicitation, the day ended on a high note, affirming that brilliance knows no boundaries.
