Thailand Earthquake: 30-Story Building Collapses, 43 Workers Missing, Watch Video

A powerful earthquake struck Thailand on Friday, shaking Bangkok. A 30-story building under construction collapsed, leaving 43 workers missing. AFP reports 50 people were inside; seven escaped, but the rest are trapped in rubble. Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra called an emergency meeting. BBC noted buildings swayed so much that water spilled from rooftop pools, with viral footage online. Extensive damage is feared.

USGS data shows the quake measured 7.7, centered 12 km from Sagaing, Myanmar, at a 10 km depth, followed by a 6.4 aftershock. BBC’s Bui Thu said, “I was cooking when I felt the tremor. I panicked. Earthquakes are rare here, and buildings aren’t built for this.” Striking at 12:20 pm local time, the quake was felt in Bangladesh, India, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and China.
