Sikkim Introduces New Tourist Tax: Pay Before You Enter the State

Sikkim has introduced a new tax for tourists entering the state. Starting in March, every visitor will have to pay a head tax of ₹50 upon entering the state. This move is aimed at generating funds for the development of tourism infrastructure and road connectivity, which have been heavily impacted by natural disasters in recent years. From landslides to flash floods, Sikkim has witnessed significant damage to its tourism sector, prompting the state to adopt measures similar to those in Bhutan.
The tax, which will be levied starting this month, was announced by the Chief Secretary of Sikkim’s Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, C.S. Rao. According to the new regulation, tourists will need to pay the ₹50 tax when they check into their hotels. This amount will allow them to explore the state for up to a month. However, if they re-enter the state within the same month, they will have to pay the tax again. Foreign tourists and individuals traveling for government work are exempt from this tax. The collected funds will be used to improve road infrastructure and tourism facilities, ensuring a better experience for tourists visiting the state.
