“The Hidden Cost of Train Wheels: What Most People Don’t Know”

Indian Railways is not only a vital transportation medium for the middle class but also an integral part of the country’s massive transport network. Each train is built with significant investments, amounting to crores of rupees, while making travel convenient and affordable for passengers. However, how many of us have thought about the cost of a single train wheel? Here’s a look into it.
The cost of building a train varies greatly based on the type of coaches used. Generally, trains have three main types of coaches: general, sleeper, and AC coaches. The material used in their construction affects the overall cost, with stainless steel used for the exterior and aluminum for the interiors. According to reports, an AC coach can cost between 2.8 to 3 crore rupees, while sleeper coaches cost around 1.25 crore, and general coaches are priced at approximately 1 crore.
So, what about the wheels? While there is no official government figure, sources suggest the price of a single train wheel is around ₹70,000. Considering that a train has several wheels, the total cost could reach nearly ₹2 crore for just the wheels alone. Despite these significant expenses, Indian Railways has kept travel affordable and accessible for the masses.
