Key changes in passports:
- Birth certificate mandatory
People born on or after October 1, 2023, will have to submit a birth certificate while applying for a passport. This certificate should be issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths, Municipal Corporation, or other government bodies.
- Digitally recorded residential address
The printing of the address on the last page of the passport book has been discontinued. Instead, the address information will be added through a passcode, which improves security.
- Removal of parents’ names
Parents’ names will no longer be printed in the passport book. This is an effort to protect privacy.
- Increase in Passport Service Centres
In the next 5 years, the number of Post Office Passport Service Centres is planned to increase from 442 to 600. This will help speed up the application process.
New colour-coding system:
The government has introduced a colour-coding system for passports to streamline identification.
White passports – issued to government officials.
Red passports – reserved for diplomats.
Blue passports – issued to ordinary citizens on a regular basis.

Online application – You can apply online through the Passport Service website. You need to fill in the required information and upload the documents.
