Birbhum on Edge: Internet Shutdown Until March 17 Amid Clashes

Birbhum’s Sainthia region has become a hotspot of tension following clashes between two community groups, prompting authorities to impose an internet shutdown until March 17. The decision was taken to control the escalating unrest and prevent the spread of rumors and illegal activities through online platforms. While internet services have been suspended, voice calls and SMS services remain operational to ensure minimal disruption to daily communication. The state government’s Home and Hill Affairs Department issued a directive under the Telecommunication Act 2023 to enforce the measure.

The conflict reportedly began during the Durga Puja festival when stone-pelting incidents sparked violence in multiple Gram Panchayat areas, including Hatuara, Mathpalsa, Harisara, Dariyapur, and Fulura. Tensions quickly spread across these regions, leading to widespread disturbances. To manage the situation, a significant police presence has been deployed in the affected areas. Authorities believe that restricting internet access will curb misinformation and help restore peace. However, the move has drawn criticism from residents who rely on the internet for their livelihoods and communication.
