Tejas LCA AF MK1 Achieves Major Milestone with Successful Missile Test

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has added another feather to its cap with the successful test-firing of the ‘Beyond Visual Range’ (BVR) air-to-air missile from the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) AF MK1. The test took place on March 12, 2025, at the Chandipur test range in Odisha. During the trial, the indigenously developed ASTRA missile successfully hit a designated aerial target, showcasing its precision and effectiveness. All subsystems performed flawlessly, meeting the objectives of the test. The ASTRA missile, developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is capable of engaging targets over 100 kilometers away. Equipped with advanced guidance and navigation systems, it ensures unparalleled accuracy in neutralizing airborne threats. This milestone marks a significant step toward integrating the Tejas LCA AF MK1A into the IAF fleet.

The success of this test reflects the collaborative efforts of multiple organizations, including ADA, DRDO, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), CEMILAC, DG-AQA, and the IAF’s test range teams. Scientists, engineers, and technicians worked tirelessly to achieve this feat. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated all stakeholders, acknowledging their dedication and hard work. Further trials are planned to validate the missile’s capabilities comprehensively. Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, praised the relentless efforts of the teams involved. This achievement not only strengthens India’s defense capabilities but also underscores the nation’s progress in indigenous aerospace technology.
