Bird Flu Alert in 9 States: Government Issues Warning

The central government of India has issued a bird flu (H5N1) alert across nine states, including Punjab, amid rising concerns over the spread of the avian influenza virus. The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying has warned that individuals consuming infected poultry could potentially contract the virus. According to a letter released by the ministry, cases of avian influenza have been reported since January 2025, affecting both private and government-owned poultry farms.

The government emphasized the urgent need to prevent further spread of the virus by enhancing biosecurity measures in all poultry farms. Immediate audits of government-run farms have been recommended to identify and rectify any lapses. States have been urged to strictly adhere to the National Action Plan on Avian Influenza, activate rapid response teams, and increase veterinary and laboratory capacities. These measures are expected to curb the spread of the virus effectively.

What Are the Symptoms and How Does Bird Flu Spread?

Symptoms of bird flu resemble those of regular flu, such as fever, cough, sore throat, muscle pain, fatigue, and breathing difficulties. While the virus primarily affects birds, humans can contract it through direct contact with infected birds or contaminated environments. Handling live or dead poultry, especially in affected areas, poses significant risks. To stay safe, avoid touching birds in outbreak zones, wash hands thoroughly after potential exposure, and ensure poultry and eggs are cooked properly before consumption. Early medical attention is advised if symptoms appear.
