Modi Receives Mauritius’ Highest Civilian Honour, Creates History

Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced on Tuesday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be conferred the nation’s highest civilian honour, “The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean.” With this, PM Modi becomes the first Indian to receive this prestigious recognition. The announcement was made during an event for the Indian community in Port Louis, symbolizing the deep-rooted ties between India and Mauritius.
During his two-day visit to Mauritius, PM Modi met with President Dharamvir Gokhool, presenting him with sacred water from the Mahakumbh Sangam and a Super Food Processing Unit as gifts. He also gifted First Lady Brinda Gokhool a Banarasi silk saree, reflecting India’s rich cultural heritage. In his address, PM Modi expressed gratitude, saying, “I feel like I am among my own people here. This honour is not just for me but a tribute to generations of Indians who have contributed to Mauritius’ progress.” He emphasized the shared history and growing bilateral relations between the two nations.
Strengthening Ties Across Multiple Fronts
Following his meeting with President Gokhool, PM Modi highlighted their discussions on enhancing cooperation across various sectors. He praised initiatives like the establishment of an Ayurvedic garden at the State House, noting the rising popularity of Ayurveda in Mauritius. This marks Modi’s second visit to the island nation after a decade, underscoring renewed efforts to deepen cultural, economic, and diplomatic ties. The conferral of the highest civilian honour reflects Mauritius’ respect for its Indian diaspora and India’s enduring influence in shaping the country’s identity.
