Bangladesh court sentences former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to first prison term after coup

This is the first time a court has sentenced former prime minister Sheikh Hasina since the coup in Bangladesh. The court has imposed a travel ban on Sheikh Hasina while giving its verdict on corruption charges in a case related to the establishment of a nuclear power plant. In this case, Sheikh Hasina was accused of receiving money illegally.

According to a report in the ‘Dhaka Tribune’, a Bangladeshi court has imposed a travel ban on Sheikh Hasina, her sister and son. The court has said that it will hear the case again in the future. The case is related to the nuclear power plant in Rooppur, Bangladesh, which was set up with great enthusiasm. It is alleged that Sheikh Hasina embezzled 59 thousand crore taka in its establishment.

After the coup, the Yunus government set up an investigation into the matter. The five-member investigation team has submitted its report, which initially stated that there was evidence against Sheikh Hasina. After the hearing in this regard, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammad Zakir Hussain Ghalib ruled to impose a travel ban on Sheikh Hasina and some of her relatives.

Under the court order, Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wajid Joy, daughter Saima Wajid Potol, Sheikh Rehana’s daughters Tulip Siddiqui and Azmina Siddiqui and her son Rizwan Mujib Siddique will not be able to travel. The Bangladeshi interim government is also going to prosecute Sheikh Hasina for genocide. Recently, acting advisor Mohammad Yunus, while talking to journalists, said that people have been killed during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure. According to Yunus, whether Sheikh Hasina comes to Bangladesh or not, but we will definitely prosecute her. Yunus says that if she is pardoned in the genocide case, it will be an injustice to the people of Bangladesh.
