Major accident: 25 dead after boat capsizes, including several footballers

A boat capsized in southwestern Congo, killing 25 people, including several footballers, authorities said on Monday. The players were returning from a match in the town of Moshi in Mai Ndombe province on Sunday night when the boat carrying them capsized in the Kwa River, provincial spokesman Alexis Maputo said. Poor visibility at night may have been a factor in the accident, Maputo said. At least 30 other people were rescued, said Renical Kouteba, the local administrator for the Moshi region. Fatal boat accidents are common in the central African country, where late-night travel and overloading are often blamed. Authorities are struggling to enforce boating laws.
