Assam is going to be the first state in India to get its own satellite. There has also been a hint from ISRO. Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog announced this good news while presenting the state budget for the financial year 2025-26 in the Assam Assembly. Later, in a press conference, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that discussions have already started with ISRO. If everything goes well, Assam will be the first state in India to get its own satellite.

In his budget speech, Newoge said, “In collaboration with IN-SPACE (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre), the Department of Space of the Government of India, we intend to launch our own satellite ‘Assamsat’ to ensure uninterrupted, reliable flow of information for the implementation of important socio-economic projects.”

At a press conference, the Assam Chief Minister said, “If we have our own satellite, it will be able to tell us if any foreigner is trying to enter illegally. This satellite can help in providing advance information about upcoming floods, weather reports, which will benefit our farmers.”

It is worth noting that till December 31, 2023, the number of artificial satellites launched by India is 127. Out of these, 32 satellites are owned by the Government of India. India’s first artificial satellite Aryabhatta was sent into space on April 19, 1975. Aryabhatta was launched from Kapustin Yar by a Soviet Cosmos-3M rocket.
