The Supreme Court has taken a stern view of the harassment of judicial officers in Malda’s Kaliachak, issuing show-cause notices to the District Magistrate (DM) and Superintendent of Police (SP). A bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi expressed intense displeasure over the administrative failure during Wednesday’s incident.

The court noted that seven judges, including three women, were surrounded by miscreants from 3:30 PM onwards. Despite the Chief Justice of the High Court personally contacting the State DGP and Home Secretary, neither the DM nor the SP reached the spot to manage the crisis. Justice Bagchi remarked, “There was a serious need for better surveillance and prompt action.” The apex court has now demanded a comprehensive report from the Home Secretary and the DGP regarding this security lapse.
