Is India Paying $2 Million Toll to Iran? MEA Clarifies Rumors Over Strait of Hormuz Transit

Amidst the escalating energy crisis triggered by the conflict in West Asia, Russia has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting India. Denis Manturov, Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister, met with PM Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to assure a steady and increased supply of crude oil and natural gas to New Delhi. This comes at a crucial time when global fuel prices are surging due to supply chain disruptions.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also addressed the viral speculation regarding a “toll fee” imposed by Iran. Reports had suggested that Iran was charging $2 million (approx. ₹18.8 crore) per vessel for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Clarifying India’s stance, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that no such discussions regarding toll fees have taken place with the Iranian authorities. This debunked rumors that India was paying exorbitant amounts to secure its shipments.
Iran has kept the strategic Strait of Hormuz closed since February 28 due to its conflict with the US and Israel. While some Indian vessels have been allowed through as a gesture of friendship, the overall supply remains under pressure. Russia’s renewed promise to bolster India’s energy reserves serves as a vital strategic cushion. India continues to balance its diplomatic ties to ensure that domestic fuel prices and industrial requirements remain stable despite the international turmoil.
