Is 2020 Returning? New ‘Cicada’ Covid Variant Spreading Silently Across the Globe!

The shadow of COVID-19 looms again as a new variant, nicknamed ‘Cicada’ (BA.3.2), emerges as a global threat. Much like the insect it is named after—which stays hidden for years before suddenly appearing—this variant has been spreading ‘under the radar’ since late 2024. Currently detected in 23 countries, it is causing significant concern in the US, where it has been traced in the wastewater of 29 states.

What makes ‘Cicada’ alarming is its 70 to 75 mutations in the spike protein. Experts warn that such high genetic variation could make it a ‘complete stranger’ to our immune system, potentially allowing it to bypass existing vaccine immunity. While India has reported 163 cases of the XFG variant, the arrival of Cicada via international travel remains a high possibility. Although there is no evidence yet that it causes more severe disease, its rapid transmission poses a risk to those with ‘Long COVID’ or chronic lung conditions. Vigilance, hygiene, and monitoring symptoms remain our best defense as the virus continues its unpredictable evolution.
