IPL 2025 Playoff Equation: 3 teams confirmed, MI, PBKS, LSG to battle for last spot

Mumbai: After 42 matches in IPL 2025, the picture of the playoffs is becoming clear. There are 28 matches left in the league stage, and all the teams have played at least 8 matches. Gujarat Titans (GT), Delhi Capitals (DC) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are at the top of the points table, whose qualification to the playoffs is almost certain. There is a tough competition between Mumbai Indians (MI), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the fourth place.
Dominance of GT, DC, RCB
Gujarat Titans are in first place with 12 points with 6 wins out of 8 and a brilliant net run rate (NRR) of +1.104. Even 2 wins from their remaining 6 matches can take them to 16 points, which is enough for the playoffs. Delhi Capitals are also in a strong position with 6 wins and +0.657 NRR. DC coach Ricky Ponting said, “Our focus is on winning every match, so that we don’t have to depend on NRR.” RCB have secured 12 points with 6 wins in 9, but their performance on home ground is a matter of concern. Still, 2 wins out of 5 can ensure their playoff berth.
Fight for the last spot
There is a tough competition for the fourth spot between MI (5 wins in 9, 10 points, +0.673 NRR), PBKS (5 wins in 8, 10 points, +0.177 NRR) and LSG (5 wins in 9, 10 points, -0.054 NRR). MI’s recent 4 wins have raised their hopes. Captain Hardik Pandya said, “Our rhythm is back, now every match is like a final.” PBKS have 6 matches left, which gives them a slight advantage, while MI and LSG have 5 matches each. All three need at least 3 wins, else NRR will be decisive.
KKR, CSK, SRH, RR face a tough road
Kolkata Knight Riders (6 points), Chennai Super Kings (4 points), Sunrisers Hyderabad (4 points) and Rajasthan Royals (4 points) face a tough road. KKR will have to win 5 and the rest will have to win all the remaining matches, which looks difficult given their current form.
