IndiGo’s Global Leap! Former British Airways Chief William Walsh Appointed as New CEO

InterGlobe Aviation Limited, the parent company of IndiGo, has announced the appointment of William Walsh (popularly known as Willie Walsh) as its new Chief Executive Officer. Walsh, a veteran in the global aviation industry, previously served as the CEO of British Airways and the International Airlines Group (IAG). He is currently the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Leadership Change After Turbulence The appointment comes shortly after the resignation of Pieter Elbers on March 11, following a severe operational crisis in late 2025 that saw thousands of flight cancellations. IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta stated that Walsh’s exceptional track record in managing large-scale airline operations makes him “ideally suited” to navigate the competitive international aviation environment.

August 2026 Onboarding Walsh is expected to officially join IndiGo by August 3, 2026, after completing his tenure at IATA on July 31. Managing Director Rahul Bhatia highlighted that as IndiGo enters a phase of transformation and global expansion, Walsh’s global perspective and operational expertise will be critical. The industry sees this as a masterstroke by IndiGo to restore passenger trust and strengthen its position in one of the world’s fastest-growing markets.
